Her Royal Highness, The Carolina Wren

Bird of the Day!

Allow me to introduce the reigning monarch of the underbrush: the Carolina wren, a bird so relentlessly cheerful she makes Snow White look like a cynic. Dressed head to perky tail in rich caramel brown, with a creamy white eyebrow stripe like she just got back from the salon, she greets every birder on the trail as if you personally RSVP’d to her ball.

And that voice! For a creature weighing about as much as four pennies, she’s astonishingly loud — her mate’s “teakettle-teakettle-teakettle” song can carry remarkably far. Fun fact: only the males sing, but they belt out their tunes year-round, because royalty doesn’t take seasons off.

She’s also a devoted homebody. Carolina wrens mate for life and stick close to their territory, which is why she seems to own that particular bramble pile. They’ll nest in mailboxes, flowerpots, old boots — anywhere with a vacancy and a view.

Her perpetually cocked tail isn’t just attitude (though there’s plenty); it’s classic wren posture. So next time she flits past, smile back. The princess of the forest expects nothing less.
